Frequently Asked Questions

In phenols, the phenoxide ion formed after deprotonation is resonance-stabilized — the negative charge is delocalized over the benzene ring. In alcohols, the alkoxide ion has no such resonance stabilization. Hence phenols are more acidic than alcohols.

Lucas test uses Lucas reagent (anhydrous ZnCl₂ + conc. HCl) to distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols. Tertiary alcohols react immediately (cloudiness), secondary in 5-10 min, primary do not react at room temperature.
